Wallace and Gromit's Children's Foundation
Wallace & Gromit’s Children’s Foundation are a national charity, passionate about improving the quality of life for sick and terminally ill children in local hospitals and hospices throughout the UK. Since 2003, they have raised over £1.6 million and supported over 45 hospitals and hospices nationwide.
They believe that every child has the right to a happy, fun and carefree childhood; yet everyday over 26,000 children are treated in hospitals and hospices across the UK. Normal life can be more difficult for a sick child and so they fund projects that ensure children can still play, spend time with friends and get better in a child friendly environment. They also support the families of sick or terminally ill children, helping them to cope by providing free family accommodation, comforts and facilities, as well as help with siblings and respite breaks.
The Foundation funds an innovative range of projects, including:
- Play Therapy to develop children’s creative skills and help them express their thoughts and worries. It may be used to help explain what is happening to them and helps children adapt to difficulties, making their experiences less traumatic.
- Sensory Equipment and Facilities to stimulate children’s senses to aid recovery and support interaction, discovery and communication.
- Respite Care to give carers a break from the responsibility of looking after a sick child.
- Music Therapy to encourage communication and motor skills; social and cognitive development; self-awareness and pain management.
- State of the Art Equipment to ensure sick children have access to the very best treatment and facilities available.
- Family Accommodation facilities that allow parents to stay close to their sick child, giving both the child comfort and the parent peace of mind.
- New Child Centred Environments to help stimulate and distract children, making their stay less scary and hopefully more fun.
- Bereavement Therapy to help parents and siblings explore their feelings of grief and come to terms with the loss of a much loved child.
