Pilgrims Hospices is a charity based in East Kent. With hospices in Ashford, Thanet and Canterbury, palliative care is offered free of charge to patients and their families.
As well as in-patient care, Pilgrims also provides 19 clinical nurse specialists who support patients and their families in their own homes. Each site has a day hospice and also hosts out patient appointments and a range of complimentary therapies.
Care at Pilgrims focuses on a multidisciplinary team approach. The team is made up of doctors, nurses, chaplains, counsellors, social workers, physiotherapists, art therapists, divisional therapists and complimentary therapists. The patient’s physical, spiritual and emotional needs are cared for and as the team meets regularly, knowledge of the patient is shared giving a complete picture of the care they require.
Pilgrims care does not stop at the patient. The support extends to families and carers as they are as much a part of the patient’s well being but also have needs of their own.
This year, Pilgrims Hospices aims to make more people aware of the high quality care they offer in the hope that more people will benefit from the support of their services. It costs £7.5 million a year to run but is completely free to patients and families. Fundraising plays a huge part in Pilgrims success so please make 2008 the year you do something to help.
