Motivation is an international disability and development charity that works in partnership with local organisations to enhance the quality of life of people with mobility disabilities in developing countries. Since 1991 Motivation has worked in over 30 countries across Central America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
It is estimated that more than 20 million people around the world are in desperate need of a wheelchair, and only 2% of disabled people in the developing world have access to basic rehabilitation services. Due to a lack of support, resources and awareness, the majority of disabled people in developing countries are unable to work and experience very low status in society and extreme poverty.
Motivation’s work is about ensuring that local organisations have the skills to build and prescribe wheelchairs that are appropriate for the local environment and fitted to meet the needs of the individual.
By working at grassroots and international level, Motivation also helps disabled people to find employment and to access their rights, enabling them to lead independent and dignified lives.
If you would like to support Motivation please buy tickets for Sandy Gall’s lecture, “Motivated to Get the Story”, which will take place on the evening of Thursday 25th October 2007 at the Royal Geographical Society in London.
Sandy Gall has been a foreign correspondent for the past 40 years, first for Reuters and then ITN. His work has taken him all over the world, from Europe to Africa, the Middle East, Vietnam, China, the first Gulf War and Afghanistan.
In the 1980’s Sandy became deeply involved in Afghanistan, making four long journeys into the interior on foot and horseback with the Afghan Resistance. Sandy Gall's Afghanistan Appeal (SGAA) was launched in 1983 to treat war-wounded Afghans.
Motivation and SGAA have been collaborating since 1996 on local wheelchair production.
Tickets for the lecture are £15 each, and all proceeds will be shared between Motivation and SGAA. To order tickets please contact Motivation on 01275 464012 during office hours, or email events [at] motivation [dot] org [dot] uk
