This year, Guide Dogs celebrates 80 years of guide dog partnerships in Britain.
Since the first four guide dogs were trained in Wallasey Cheshire in
1931, the charity has enabled thousands of blind and partially sighted
people to get out and about on their own terms.
Guide Dogs provides mobility and freedom to blind and partially
sighted people through 4,500 guide dog partnerships and other services
such as long cane training and sighted guiding. The organisation also
campaigns for the rights of people with visual impairment, funds
research and delivers confidence-building rehabilitation services to
children and young people.
There are 180,000 blind and partially sighted people in the UK who
never leave home alone. Guide Dogs will not rest until they enjoy the
same freedom of movement as everyone else. Working closely with
colleagues in the sight loss sector, local voluntary groups and MPs,
Guide Dogs aims to ensure that people affected by visual impairment
are able to get out and about and live life on their own terms.
