CAADA – Co-ordinated Action Against Domestic Abuse

CAADA

CAADA is a charity established to encourage the use of independent advocacy as a way to increase the safety of survivors of domestic abuse.

WHY CAADA EXISTS:

This year in Britain domestic violence will account for the deaths of two women every week and represents about 23% of all violent crime. Around 70% of children taken into care have experienced domestic violence. CAADA estimate that at any time around 150,000 women and 250,000 children are at risk of serious injury or murder by an abuser at home.

Until now, the only option for victims was to flee to an emergency refuge, often miles away. Refuges have saved hundreds of lives, and will continue to do so in extreme cases, but it’s CAADA’s aim to help as many families as possible to stay safely within their own homes and see abusers shut out instead. Legal developments and changes in the approach of many agencies mean that with a personal advocate this should be possible.

The role of a personal advocate is to stand beside a woman. The advocate is an expert on all aspects of a victim’s safety. She advises, explains and ensures that a comprehensive safety plan for each individual is implemented, working closely with, but independent from, the authorities.

WHAT DOES CAADA DO?

It is CAADA’s aim to re-engineer the response to domestic violence in this country. They plan to develop a professional network of advocates to help achieve this. CAADA has developed a certified, professional, training course, the first in the field, which has become the recognised standard and they work nationally to ensure a consistently high standard of service to the highest risk victims in our society. Historically domestic violence has been seen as an intractable problem. The provision of professional advocacy services is changing this and saving lives.
